PRINCE2 Training is the blog offered by Silicon Beach Training under the leadership of Andy Trainer, a training manager for SBT. Many of the posts written for the blog are provided by the company’s accredited PRINCE2 trainers.

“We blog to keep up interest in our site and to provide resources for the delegates on our PRINCE2 courses,” Andy says. “We’re interested in finding that audience of people interested in Project Management, especially those looking for PM qualifications such as PRINCE2. It serves as a compilation of project management news, tips, tools, resources and downloads to complement our PRINCE2 training courses and for general reading.”

Silicon Beach Training are based in Brighton, offering courses on IT and Business skills as well as project management.

“We provide over 200 courses on a range of subjects – everything from web design to confidence building,” Andy says. “Rather than clog up our main site with multiple blog posts every day we decided to create a sister site for some of our key areas so that we could blog regularly for a particular niche without putting off those not interested.”

The most popular post stems from leadership issues raised in 2010:

Is Project Management and Project Leadership the same?

Emiliano Soldi’s Project Management Agile Blog premiered in September 2009 under Soldi’s direction. In that, the blog has a leader that has walked the walk.

Emiliano is a senior project manager with over 15 years of experience in the ICT sector. He told us that “his core skills lie in Project and Portfolio Management as well as PMO (Project Management Office) setup and operation, i.e. methods, techniques and tools to ensure projects are always aligned to business needs, coordinated and executed at maximum efficiency.”

A PMP and CSM certified professional, with solid knowledge of the project management standard and of the agile disciplines, Emiliano “is currently managing software development projects for his company and giving project management consultancy, using both the Traditional and Agile/Scrum Project Management approaches.

He is also an experienced trainer in various Project Management disciplines.

“As a founding partner of a Project Management Consultancy agency, I have experience in the main aspects of client management, from sourcing the business and negotiating bids to full delivery of assignments with multiple teams, as well as an huge technical experience in conducting software development projects.”

Emiliano was motivated to start PM Agile Blog “because project management is a fascinating, eclectic and complex discipline and I would talk about it and find a way to share my ideas and to gather new ideas from the others. I love to communicate and to share my passions: project management is one of the most important passions I have.”

Publishing once a week, his most widely read post tackles the beginning of a project by way of a meeting:

Planning a Kickoff Meeting

He has three posts that he calls his personal favourites:

The Planner Tutorials Hub is a blog for project managers, controllers, schedulers and planners alike with a need for quality guides on how to work with certain tools common to the trade. Planner Tutorials is headed by Michael Lepage, a “a Primavera and Project Management expert working with companies large and small.”

Lepage also works as a trainer and instructional designer and holds a Project Management Professional cerfication from PMI.org. He says he started the weekly blog in August 2011 because he felt those occupations would be well-served in a weblog format.

“I write tutorials because I love to teach and I’m pretty keen on technology,” Michael says. “There seems to be a lack of tutorials and how-tos on the web for the tools that project managers and planners like Oracle Primavera. We’re trying to help fill that gap by providing real-world step-by-step tutorials for beginners or the advanced user.”

What motivates Michael to post? “Well, there’s a need to pass information on and to make it available to the community. The community as a whole becomes stronger when it’s engaged and resources are available to foster best practices and insightful discussion. Our tutorials are for planners, schedulers, project managers and other project controls professionals.”

The most widely read blogis a video that explains how to include Excel data in a Primavera update

Project Manage This holds a unique spot in PPM Community: to date, it’s the only one we’ve come across that posts on a purely anonymous basis. We intend to protect the anonymity of its editor-in-chief whilst opening your minds to what this PPM blog can bring to the table, primarily as a blog with an unmatched perspective and narrative.

“The voice isn’t meant to be me; instead its a conglomeration of PM types,” says the editor, who we’ll respectfully refer to as PMT. “I’ve been managing projects and programs for over a decade. I currently manage 12 pm types and am inspired each day by them. Watching the challenges they face, and witnessing them overcome each with grace is what keeps me going.”

The blog is the newest on the PPM Community, premiering on a weekly basis 8th October 2011. PMT effectively deals with the ins and outs of project management, tackling the Yin and Yang inherent with such a job.

“Simply put – it’s an outlet. I wanted to create a space to post tips, tales and observations about the career I love and hate,” PMT says. “Project managers, program managers, producers, account managers, coordinators, and the like. (They are) the unsung heroes. We’re the ones that keep things moving and get it done on time and on budget. We keep our teams motivated and on track, make sure our boss and/or client is happy, and ensure that the community we’re building for get the best product possible. You never see us sweat, rarely hear us swear, and are amazed at how calm we are when fires erupt. That’s because we’re good at what we do.

“We absolutely love our job. Making things happen, getting things done, that’s our nature. We never ever vent at work. Ok, rarely do. But we do have tales to tell. ‘Project Manage This’ is a place for PM types to love and hate the career we’ve chosen.”

The brief time away from the job – weekends – allows PMT the ability to reflect on what would make for good content in the blog.

“When the weekend rolls around, I simmer on the events of the week,” PMT says. “Instead of just thinking about it, I’ve decided to type something up.”

As PMT wants to protect their anonymity, the most we can tell you about their professional background is that PMT “was born a PM type, as I’m sure most people visiting your blog were.” PMT also made clear that the blog “isn’t about me. It’s about PMs.”

Considering that Project Manage This is in its early days, PMT had only one post they could really shed light on:

Top 10 Plus 1 – Personality Traits of a PM

PMP Project Management Blog is a blog from PMCAMPUS, an online warehouse of tips and advice on study materials in preparation for the PMP and CAPM certification exam, including a wealth of practice questions.

A relatively recent addition to the PPM Community, PMP Project Management Blog premiered in April 2011 and currently updates with three posts every week. “We started the blog to offer an additional resource for project managers, and project managers in training,” says PMCAMPUS founder Kahina Morriset, who doubles as the blog supervisor and a renowned e-Learning producer. “Our goal is to be a valuable resource to individuals in the project management field, offering our experience, advice and training.”

Kahina’s expertise and achievement is a big driving force for the blog’s potential. A 2007 MBA graduate from McGill University, Kahina has maintained her PMP credential since 2005. She has produced several award winning multimedia training CD and WebBased training products spanning a variety of diverse industries. Her peers have taken notice: her career recognition includes being the 2001 recipient of the esteemed “1001 Talent Award”, and a nominated finalist for the Multimedia Mobius Prize. Kahina is dedicated to leverage internet capabilities and find new ways to design, develop and deliver high quality and low cost eLearning solutions to promote learning and empower people.

Kahina puts the focus on the interest of her early followers of the blog, especially those by way of Twitter.

“The blog is a mix of project management advice on leadership techniques, study tips for the PMP exam, guidance for new project managers, and reviews on the latest in technology for all project managers and their teams,” she says. “Our Twitter followers are so great. Everytime we post, they are right there to read the articles, retweet and talk to the project management community about the content. There’s a lot of great project managers on Twitter, as well as project managers in training! They offer opinions, advice and feedback which helps to make our programs stronger. We’re proud to be a part of such a great community.”

That great community has devoured one particular post on PMP development as the most popular on the site, as well as one of her own favourites…

Other favourites include the following two:

Ron Rosenhead has many years of experience of project and programme management. He is Chief Executive of Project Agency, set up in 1995, wherein he works in organisations:

demystifying project management with professionals at all levels

developing core skills – of Project Managers, their teams and Project Sponsors

providing guidelines and protocols for staff to follow

helping those involved in the project management process to recognise the need to further develop their “people skills” as well as their project management skills.

An acclaimed professional speaker and strategist with project management issues, Ron started his self-titled blog in 2007. He offers a new post each week.

“My role with the blog is to help support companies to develop. I see blogging as a continuation of this process,” he told us.

It’s not necessarily his expertise that he uses as a summation of his blog: its one particular piece of feedback he’s received.

“I have been described as the challenging blogger,” Ron says. “When I asked what this meant the comment came back: ‘You present information that is logical but challenging; challenging by asking the reader rhetorical questions that are designed to make them think.’”

Ron is motivated to post on the blog as a chance to share his experience, provide information, and eliminate mistakes too common within the profession.

“I am also motivated to post as I like writing and asking questions.”

He added his audience is restricted to “anyone! From the inexperienced project manager or the person just starting off in project management through to senior execs who are involved in projects.”

Ron started his career as an internal trainer and got involved in projects through the massive amount of change going on in the organisation.

“My life changed when a senior manager said, ‘Have you got a minute? I’ve got this big bit of work to do and have no idea how to do it,’” he recalls. “I ran some initial workshops and that was my introduction to project management.

“(Since then) I have successfully delivered projects and trained many many thousands of people to deliver projects. My focus is on practical project management – people are looking for pragmatism – which is what I deliver.”

The most widely read post at Ron Rosenhead deals with handover:

Where’s the project handover plan?

His favourites include these three:

Project management comment causes quite a stir

Its like pushing a stone up a hill

Can I please check you are my project sponsor?

Recently, Ron introduced a new weekly feature to the blog called “This Week’s BIG Question”.

Project management trainer Obsideo launced a blog in late May 2011 under the editorial stewardship of Mike Watson, a partner at the company. The newbie to the PPM blogosphere offers a weekly post.

“We started the blog to have an outlet for sharing knowledge, rants and raves,” Mike told us. “I’m motivated to post because I am a trainer; I like to stimulate other people into thinking and action.”

Mike added that the blog is aimed at a variety of concentrated practitioners, including “business people who run projects, whether large or small. Also project team members, clients/users, and people who suffer from poor attempts to manage projects.”

As a trainer, Mike’s background came through a technical scope on the software development side, which launced a career of over 30 years as a project manager, and 20 of which that saw him training.

Mike didn’t offer any posts that he could list as personal favourites or the blog’s most popular; as of press time, the blog had only three live posts, with several more scheduled to go out in the coming weeks. Those first three posts include:

<a href="http://www.obsideo.com/blog/?p=12"rel="bookmark" target="_blank" class="extlink">Have the argument at the beginning!

<a href="http://www.obsideo.com/blog/?p=18"rel="bookmark" target="_blank" class="extlink">My Boss Knows Nothing – Thank Goodness

<a href="http://www.obsideo.com/blog/?p=15"rel="bookmark" target="_blank" class="extlink">Why is the PMI doing this?

Get out in front of the crowd as Obsideo aim to take off in the PPM blogosphere – follow Mike on Twitter @oldmanwatson.
