PRINCE2 Training is the blog offered by Silicon Beach Training under the leadership of Andy Trainer, a training manager for SBT. Many of the posts written for the blog are provided by the company’s accredited PRINCE2 trainers.

“We blog to keep up interest in our site and to provide resources for the delegates on our PRINCE2 courses,” Andy says. “We’re interested in finding that audience of people interested in Project Management, especially those looking for PM qualifications such as PRINCE2. It serves as a compilation of project management news, tips, tools, resources and downloads to complement our PRINCE2 training courses and for general reading.”

Silicon Beach Training are based in Brighton, offering courses on IT and Business skills as well as project management.

“We provide over 200 courses on a range of subjects – everything from web design to confidence building,” Andy says. “Rather than clog up our main site with multiple blog posts every day we decided to create a sister site for some of our key areas so that we could blog regularly for a particular niche without putting off those not interested.”

The most popular post stems from leadership issues raised in 2010:

Is Project Management and Project Leadership the same?

Andy points to three specific favourites:

Web Soup is a blog run by Andy Bawden, a project manager and eCommerce specialist with 9 years experience as a pm. The blog has undergone a change recently, switching from the WordPress to Posterous in February 2011. Andy’s credentials as a PRINCE2 practitioner with nearly a decade of experience across the public and private sectors have motivated Project magazine to feature him in an article as one of the “Rising Stars: Next Generation PM” in their April 2011 issue.

Andy told us that the blog has several main areas of focus:

the of art project management: skills, experiences, qualification and best practice

e-commerce and web-design: design ideas, good websites, new functionality and thoughts

new tech and tools for web design, eCommerce, social media, project management, marketing

news: what is happening out there? what new inititives or creations are going to improve what we do?

“I started the blog to get people talking about project management, eCommerce, web designs, new tools and tech,” he says. “Also, I’ve used it to enhance my online profile, linking in with Twitter and LinkedIn.

“I’m motivated to post through sharing the things I like with others, e.g pm tools I use, new eCommerce sites, cools widgets, news, tips etc. If I like it I want to share it.”

Web Soup targets an audience of project managers and anyone within the digital trade, especially eCommerce.

SpanishPMO is a Spanish-language project management blog run by Fermin de Rojas that focuses on elements within PM, namely methodologies, tools, jobs and coaching. A bilingual project management expert educated at Brighton University, Fermin was startled to find a wealth of PM blogs available in English, compared to the relative lack in his native Spanish, and decided to take care of such matters himself as a major audience seemed to be missing out.

“I took for granted that everybody could speak english or at least could read it, but realised that there were very little information regarding Project Management in Spanish,” Fermin told us. “Bear in mind that there are 350 million Spanish speakers, mainly in Latin America, EEUU and Spain.

“This is the main reason why SpanishPMO.com was born, a website focus in project management in spanish, specialized in articles of how to set up a PMO, methodologies like Prince2 and PMI, tools, cyber security, coaching, negotiation and leadership skills.”

Fermin uses SpanishPMO as a portal in “specialized in articles of how to set up a PMO, methodologies like Prince2 and PMI, tools, cybersecurity, coaching, negotiation and leadership skills.” He says his audiences not only centers on those practising or interested in practising project management and leadership, but also those who work in an office environment.

“I motivated to blog through my own goals of personal self-improvement and self-satisfaction. I want to evangelise the word of Project Management and Agile method in the Spanish mentality.”

Fermin says his most popular post concerns Spanish-language books fellow speakers can turn to as PPM-related resources (links in Spanish only)
Libros

The blog is updated two times a week at a minimum, she says.

“I have worked for APMG as Press and PR Officer since 2003,” Kate says. “My background is as a freelance journalist and I now specialise in writing for the programme, project and service management communities. I write articles and case studies for OGC and also manage the international communications program for APMG.

“We started the blog in order to be able to discuss issues with our candidates and accredited training community. We wanted to ensure that people know that although we are the examiner for their qualifications, we are very approachable!”

Kate says APMG’s blog endeavours to reach their vast audience of APMG qualifications takers and trainers alike who associate with the body in some shape or form on a regular basis.

“The themes are learning in programme, project, risk and service management,” she says. “We aim to let people know when new examinations are released, what is available to them, how to expand their career options, and discuss why its a good idea to keep developing yourself professionally.”

The blog premiered in 2008, posting several times each month with the intent of reaching out to Focus’ built-in community of some 30,000 – and then reaching a bit further beyond as well.

“I’d describe our blog as Informative and Professional,” says Rex. We’re motivated to post because we want to keep our visitors informed. We are able to provide clear and objective advice to those who are often confused by the mass of conflicting information available.”

Rex adds that Blogalot’s intended audience are “business professionals involved with Project Management, Programme Management, Change Management, Business Analysis, and IT Service Management.”

“As one of the most successful and well known project management specialists throughout the UK and Europe, AFA would like to give a unique insight into the mind of some of the most respected managers within the community and a unique ‘all access’ view of our organisation,” he says. “We hope the AFA blog will give people an insight into practices for delivering change, including portfolio, programme and project management as well as AFA as an organisation.

The newness of the blog creates an uncertainty as to where the content of the blog will lead over time, though change could be a key area of focus.

“What will we be discussing? Of course we don’t know – that is the beauty of a blog,” Alan says. “When AFA was founded by me over 15 years ago the world was simple – we used project management. But as time has moved on we have all realised that we need more tools, methods, methodologies, disciplines, practices… Then there is programme and now portfolio management, offices, maturity models and a whole range of super-techniques: benefits, risk, value. And below all this sits the softer side of achieving change – change management. Well we have found ourselves referring to this set of methods as Practices for Delivering Change. So I think the theme of the blog will be Practices for Delivering Change.”

Alan’s experience includes updating the most recent Best Practice management guidance. AFA, he says, is in demand to deliver master classes and other training events throughout Europe. Since founding AFA, Alan has delivered assignments in numerous locations as far afield as New York and Canberra; he has experience in working with both public & private sector organisations.

“Here at AFA, we are having more and more fascinating discussions on blogs and discussion groups and thought we would like to pull these debates together in one place,” he says. “The best way to do this was to a create a blog, which we hope in time will become a community, a place like minded colleagues can share their views and ideas.”

The most widely read post on the AFA blog is:

Are you a true Project Manager?

Some of Alan’s favourites include these three:

Jose Luis posts up to two times monthly, providing a distinctive Spanish-language voice for PRINCE2 focussed project managers worldwide.

“PRINCE2 in Spanish is a blog to talk about the PRINCE2 method, the PRINCE2 certification and news related with PRINCE2 in general,” he says. “My goal is to share information that I find interesting with the rest of people who can find it interesting too. My intended audience includes people interested in knowing what PRINCE2 is and students of the PRINCE2 certification.”

Jose Luis worked for more than a decade in the IT industry in a variety of capacities, including software developer, analyst, team leader and consultant on different projects for different clients. He says he has a strong software development & analysis background, particularly in retail and government, which has since fueled his interest in project management.

His most popular post on PRINCE2 in Spanish concerned the Processes of the methodology:

The Green PM – Fresh Perspectives on Project Leadership is a weekly blog run by veteran project management professional Jhaymee Wilson dedicated to promoting and advancing the project management profession on a global scale. Jhaymee, a Project Manager for an IT firm based in Virginia, premiered the blog in February 2010 with a goal of reaching two emerging sectors of project management: the “green minded” and the new recruits, with a focus on getting started as through pillars she states as:

Education

Experience

Mentoring

“I wanted to provide new and emerging project managers (or ‘green’ PMs) with a good resource to learn about how to begin a career in project management,” she says. “The Green PM focuses on creating and cultivating leaders rather than managers. The articles provided on the blog give our “green” PMs an idea of concepts that leaders should think about, and focuses on building values based leaders in project management.”

In Green PM, Jhaymee writes in a manner that allows her to combine experience in the PM field (she has been at her Virginia IT firm for 7 years, dealing with projects in finance and non-profit) with her wealth of education on project management and IT (which includes a PMP, an IPMA-D and an MS in Project Management). While admitting it’s heavy on personal experiences, Jhaymee says her intended audience of budding PMs can take away more about the roots of leadership rather than merely managing the project.

“As a recent graduate of the Master’s in Project Management Program at The George Washington University, I noticed that a lot of programs tend to focus on building great managers, but not leaders,” she says. ” I hope that The Green PM changes that perspective and encourages and supports project leadership.

“The blog is intended for any project manager, but I tend to focus on new PMs who are looking for tangible guidance on leadership.”

Jhaymee admits it’s hard to determine which of the following two posts from The Green PM have been more popular.

“There’s a Map for That – PMI Certifications”

“Adventures in Babysitting – Avoid Becoming Your Project Team’s Au Pair.”

In addition to the “Babysitting” post, Jhaymee has two more posts she considers to be her three favourites from The Green PM:

“Undercover Boss – Key Lessons in Project Leadership”

“From Film Student to Project Manager”

Follow The Green PM and Jhaymee on Twitter @TheGreenPM.

“I’m very passionate about project management, and I can’t wait to connect with PMs and PgMs around the world on the value of education in building project management expertise,” she says.
