CommsAbilities is a blog edited by veteran communications consultant Jo Ann Sweeney. Jo Ann’s work in consulting sees her work with project teams to effectively establish solid communications. Her weekly posts aim to provide practical tips and advice to project managers.

Candidly, Jo Ann admits that she is brought into the project when it has reached a point of no return.

“I started the blog in July 2009 to raise awareness among project managers about the difference communications can make to the success of their projects,” Jo Ann says. “I’m motivated to blog through working with project teams who didn’t think communications was important, hit significant problems at rollout and then brought me in to sort them out. I wish they’d involved me – or another communications consultant – from the beginning.”

A chartered marketer and journalist who works with large organisations, Jo Ann uses CommsAbilities to help project people understand key elements of project communications like practical communications, information flows, communications planning and persuading stakeholders. And she adds that the blog continues its evolution by adding new features.

“I am about to start a running feature looking at the top ten communication skills project managers need to do their job, such as active listening and negotiating,” she says.
